First day at ABC Dayhomes

Sending your child to dayhome for the first time is hard. Often, it’s harder for the parent than the child! Cue your guilt that they won’t be with you all the time, the second guessing yourself, the joy at finding quality childcare, the relief at the help you’ll be getting… and then, maybe a little guilt for the relief of some support?! And so it goes. Those first few days, maybe even weeks, can be tough until everyone settles into the new routine.

At ABC Dayhomes, we’ll do everything to make the transition as smooth as possible for your child, you, and your family. Here are some suggestions to keep in mind for those first few days:

Consider letting someone else drop off

If you have this option, maybe a relative or close family friend can handle drop off the first few times. There could be a few tears (yours!). It may be a little easier for you to say goodbye at home than at the dayhome door.

Focus on your child

In the bustle of drop off - unloading backpacks, taking off shoes - it’s easy to get distracted. Take some time to focus on your child before you leave. This can help them relax and ease any nervousness. When it’s time to go, let your child know you’re leaving and that you’ll be back. Some children do best when a parent limits the amount of time spent saying goodbye. Others want the reassurance of your presence until they feel more comfortable. Find what works for your family.

It’s ok to worry

If it helps you worry less, text your Dayhome Director during the day. She will give you a quick update and reassure you that all is well. You’ll have a better day knowing your child is having a great day.

Thank you for trusting us!
