Baking with kids
At ABC Dayhomes, we believe that everyday activities are a great way to help your child learn and develop new skills. Baking is one such activity. Be sure to visit abcdayhomes.com to learn more about our program!
Baking with children is a fun activity that can teach them a lot more than you may think:
Reading Skills
When the Directors bake with the kids, a recipe is used. Kids learn that it’s important to read that recipe carefully, understand it, and follow the directions.
Math Skills
There is a lot of counting and measuring involved in baking, which allows your child to practice and improve their math skills. If a recipe calls for three eggs, they count out the eggs. When measuring half a cup of sugar, they learn about fractions. Setting a timer for the baked treats helps them to understand about time and practice counting.
Patience
Patience is another life skill that can be learned through baking. Whether waiting for dough to rise or for the timer to beep, they will have to learn how to be patient while baking. If they can be patient, the reward is a yummy treat. Fun activities can be played while waiting.
Self-Esteem
A lot of hard work, concentration, and patience is needed to bake. At the dayhomes, when kids finally get to taste-test their treats, they feel accomplished and proud of their work. This boosts self-esteem and helps them feel more confident in their abilities.
Bonding
Baking is fun and a great way to bond as a family. You can build many fun memories with your children in the kitchen baking goodies together.
At home, whether making holiday cookies, dough for pizza night, or baking just for fun, your little ones can benefit significantly from this activity.
